With Houdini 21, I wanted to explore the new 2D simulation workflows in Copernicus, especially reaction diffusion and flow-based systems. This project was my first attempt at building a reaction diffusion workflow inside COPs.

I started by creating a heightmap using the new reaction diffusion solver, which I then used as an input on a grid. From there, I combined the map with a bit of VEX and a Solver SOP to make parts of the plane gradually grow over time.

Since this was my first time working with COPs, the project felt like a very exciting introduction to image-based simulation workflows inside Houdini. I also really enjoyed turning my usual pipeline around for once. Instead of starting with a fixed concept and building the technical setup around it, I began with the simulation itself and then developed a visual idea that felt coherent with the result.

The process was a lot of fun and made me want to explore Copernicus further in future projects, especially for more abstract and organic visual systems.

Huge Thanks to Emilia Kuba Kern who has created the music used in this video!
